- If you were to start a school from scratch, what would it look like? When responding to this consider Papert and Couros' readings and discuss how they guided your ideas or how they are different/similar?
If I was to create a school from scratch, I would follow many montessori practices and guidelines. I believe that teachers look to gamifying and technology to artificially create student engagement and excitement. Students are naturally inquisitive and when given the opportunity to learn and explore what is interesting to them, they will not only learn more, but be driven to continue reading and writing about those topics. In my school I would allow specials to be driven on mindful practices such as yoga, mediation, and community service. With each passing year new curriculum is brought in, or brought back to help increase test scores. These non negotiables consume so much time in todays school system that math and sciences are skipped to hit the testing grades. While data is extremely important, I would double dip and create reading curriculum based heavily in the sciences to ensure students are exposed to them.
- In reading the Couros chapters and the Ken Robinson video, what does your classroom look like? Would you want to be a learner in your classroom?
As the first weeks of school progress, my classroom has been very "me" heavy, with setting expectations and routines. I have not begun to utilize student devices for digital resources. My classroom has a very interactive foundation in which students are excited for our tasks and their part in them, but the day could not (yet) run without my administration of the tasks. I shy from the use of my interactive board, and just like in the text it is a glorified television/chalkboard. While students have free reign of the math tools, writing materials, and book selection, I am working to develop characters and safety within the class and create experiences that model todays world with executive functions. I personally would love to be a learner in my class, well because I have brought myself into the room. From VWbus and scrabble lettering, to our writing music played on vinyl, I build quite the experience that many have not been a part of before.
